...its been some time since my last update and lot of things happened since than.
After quite some time of searching and finding out about next steps, career chances and applications. During the first 3 months of this year i´ve been 3 times in London for several Interviews, had several good ones and some worse ones. But finally had a successfull interview and started with my new job as Urban Designer at Atkins UK beginning of march. It was quite a big hurry, as they wanted me to start witin 2 weeks and i had to organize quite a lot of formal things for my first job in the uk.
During my first week in the Atkins Headquarter in Epsom/Surrey i got some introduction to the work, but already after 7 weeks i flew out to Abu Dhabi for 2 weeks and another 2 weeks in Dubai to work on Urban Planning projects. This work was due to my chinese large scale planning experiences and was one reason why i got this job.
After return to the UK after easter i got back to Epsom, but needed some orientation in the company and finally after 4 weeks got transfered to the London office in Euston Tower to work in their Urban Design team. I found a room in a christian houseshare with two south africans and enjoyed living with them for two months. During those 2 months in London from April to June i got into close contacts to the Holy Triniton Brompton church and met several new friends there. Also work started to get more challenging with lots of new projects.
It came quite sudden when i was asked by my London boss if i would like to work in the Atkins Dubai office for around 3 months. Within 10 days i was able to leave my room, get everything settled up and flew over to Dubai.
Its now been 3 weeks here in Dubai and its feeling already longer. The workload is massive here with lots of responsibilities being the only urban designer in the department. I´m working mainly as Lead urban designer for a concept masterplan for Bawadi, a gigantic 10 km long shopping strip in the heart of Dubailand. Bawadi will have the largest hotel "Asia-Asia" with 6500 rooms and the largest Shopping Mall in the world and will have the first hotels ready in 2010.
The Client is one of the biggest developer in the UAE and is very keen to get this project done in the shortest amount of time. That means lots of meetings with the Sheiks during the week and also internal meetings.
It is very challenging for me and a big learning environment and mayor careerpush to work with Atkins. The work with Atkins itself is in a similar way challenging and opens a lot of opportunties for me as well in the uk, but also much more internationally. Through my former chinese experiences and my time now in Dubai lots of new doors open up for future work.
Being the 3rd largest multidisciplinary design office internationally (17.000 workers worldwide) there are lots of excellent chances. Its all about being proactive and the will to move on and growing in my profession and for that its good to be with Atkins right now. My time here in Dubai will last until end of september or eventually some weeks longer. It could be quite probably that i will work in Asia (Shanghai, Singapore) again in the closer future summing up my chinese and middle east experiences.
For now my best greetings, trying to keep in touch with you and will keep posting future updates.
